I often get asked how I make some of my items...especially the buttons that aren't just plain circles. We have started making lime lapse videos that show most of the process.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

This week's video features these cute little flower buttons. </div>

<br />
If you haven't seen this series, it's a set of 12 videos where she walks us through knitting a sweater, step by step. You can subscribe to the series at <a href="http://www.kathleendames.com/">Kathleen's website</a> to get the free pattern (until early March) or you can just watch the videos on You Tube. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj10VF9tK2bM7Zfh3HZZY9z2yLDGKCNNLdk_bd-V8WIdRatzHSN3NFeiyHmg_uS91muRQVlr_hUAa8uhQvEx6ZJ_YOb7V7KLY3iBLotHX9wQGN_9e7BC4O920Gb4HVzRAstAXVSwKs45m0/s1600/solstice-s1-itunes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj10VF9tK2bM7Zfh3HZZY9z2yLDGKCNNLdk_bd-V8WIdRatzHSN3NFeiyHmg_uS91muRQVlr_hUAa8uhQvEx6ZJ_YOb7V7KLY3iBLotHX9wQGN_9e7BC4O920Gb4HVzRAstAXVSwKs45m0/s320/solstice-s1-itunes.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
She's using my hand made buttons on her sweater (<a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/RemembrancesPottery?section_id=15145812&ref=shopsection_leftnav_4">you can get some here, in my etsy shop)</a> and mentioned how great it is that my buttons are glazed on both sides so they are nice and smooth (that is not always the case with ceramic buttons). So YAY! <br />
<br />
In fact, if you watch the video, she shows how to make your buttons interchangeable on a hand knit sweater, so you can have a regular set of buttons and a "party set". So Fun! All.of.the.buttons!<br />

I think it was WAY back in December, <a href="http://www.brandonknittingdesigns.com/">Varian Brandon of Brandon Knitting Designs</a> did a Knit-Along on Periscope with her Espen hat/headband pattern.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Mine is officially finished! I added the buttons this morning. This was my plan all along, which is why I chose white flowers on a green background, but...well...I got distracted.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpO1CjOJZV-YVmJ_zTTXt78Va0R6hDw_VprUjvMoAgV8W9g5Sj6QgYTjEgn7vBqaVti48DrU_87eiDk8AdRKAK1J896SCaHO1j8sc69IowJcdtKLhMhsu916zG4y-As1L8IeEZye0VN-Y/s1600/Espen+hat+with+buttons.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpO1CjOJZV-YVmJ_zTTXt78Va0R6hDw_VprUjvMoAgV8W9g5Sj6QgYTjEgn7vBqaVti48DrU_87eiDk8AdRKAK1J896SCaHO1j8sc69IowJcdtKLhMhsu916zG4y-As1L8IeEZye0VN-Y/s400/Espen+hat+with+buttons.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This was my first attempt at a sweater for ME!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigWholHN_L_IkfVaTcrbDnquGCaouLPnuVzqagOZ2IpaVUKbxRY4ySv7m-M2v23UYxUJq03mtQ7QFTP_QmDU5oS71bDqT8g4-znznrsRtR5clPl0jeP_qhqiqYRX78w_akrMF2vNV8AjE/s1600/DSCN9942.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigWholHN_L_IkfVaTcrbDnquGCaouLPnuVzqagOZ2IpaVUKbxRY4ySv7m-M2v23UYxUJq03mtQ7QFTP_QmDU5oS71bDqT8g4-znznrsRtR5clPl0jeP_qhqiqYRX78w_akrMF2vNV8AjE/s400/DSCN9942.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The pattern has an integrated button band (which means the button holes are on both sides) and so the buttons I am using are interchangeable...kind of like cuff links.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeHrv3ncnOYu306N-h1-vJUBrtO8W0UKlbwbs-7uLpyKnhA_PasZGilF80Hei7KUG72b5Dp0C8cfKplObOu0c4Y_VouL7uR52yVZpdbBY7wwZIImJlHtjzBrB-P9-z6ckXCJ9LtM9fTPE/s1600/DSCN9943.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeHrv3ncnOYu306N-h1-vJUBrtO8W0UKlbwbs-7uLpyKnhA_PasZGilF80Hei7KUG72b5Dp0C8cfKplObOu0c4Y_VouL7uR52yVZpdbBY7wwZIImJlHtjzBrB-P9-z6ckXCJ9LtM9fTPE/s400/DSCN9943.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For now, they are matched to the stripe colours, but I also have a full set of plain white buttons that I can pop in when I'm looking for something a little more subdued.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj-a9spKXen7P74b__40MwVHqKYBLiwt9xA4WjLFAW1xDAO9qR9FgTxLEm5NcJHKnNtZD3YptUceTytFmD4DXy3aBXxMxPgI_MtNksCS1Ygek35Bv1tJy40tRp2nAn2r5f8zRPQ6gRvPU/s1600/DSCN9944.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj-a9spKXen7P74b__40MwVHqKYBLiwt9xA4WjLFAW1xDAO9qR9FgTxLEm5NcJHKnNtZD3YptUceTytFmD4DXy3aBXxMxPgI_MtNksCS1Ygek35Bv1tJy40tRp2nAn2r5f8zRPQ6gRvPU/s400/DSCN9944.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I did some fun colourblocking...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFYQ_hdbnqWzuQ_as9Mvc2KCV6CE3kQ9Tv8QLwUTLNZw2cVVLbDyk_idEK0_PjEMIqQA5mSuRpCNvawxcuD5h5X52yLlcyYgSJEGAojQ6dkCkDNuH5HEQFUqggsTlzR8R76YWCIomFuoU/s1600/DSCN9940.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFYQ_hdbnqWzuQ_as9Mvc2KCV6CE3kQ9Tv8QLwUTLNZw2cVVLbDyk_idEK0_PjEMIqQA5mSuRpCNvawxcuD5h5X52yLlcyYgSJEGAojQ6dkCkDNuH5HEQFUqggsTlzR8R76YWCIomFuoU/s400/DSCN9940.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
...and most of the sweater is done in plain stockinette, which I love!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
There will be another sweater in the future...in fact, I have already cast on!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What are you working on this week?</div>

<br /></div>
Today I'm sharing a list of makers put together by <a href="http://www.anntudor.com/blog">Ann Tudor</a>. Ann is a glass worker (I want to say lampwork?) and has decided that she wants to support small business and individual makers this upcoming holiday season, and has shared her list on her blog <a href="http://www.anntudor.com/blog/meet-some-periscope-friends">here</a>. I thought it would be fun to share the same list, with pictures.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm going to start with Ann herself. She's on <a href="https://instagram.com/anntudorllc/">Instagram</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/AnnTudorLLC/?fref=ts">Facebook</a>, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and you can shop directly from <a href="http://www.anntudor.com/store">her online store</a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
She makes these amazing ice cube martini picks, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
but I kind of want a bowl full of the cubes to put a candle in. Wouldn't that sparkle</div>

Yesterday, I was at my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Heaven-is-Handmade-152048284837079/">lys (local yarn store)</a> looking for multiple colours of yarn for an upcoming project.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was looking for dk, and they suggested three different brands that each had their own colourways.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I chose 6 balls from one brand and had them laid out on the counter, but since I had initially walked in looking for "bright" colours, I moved over to another brand and started to try to put a set together.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The owner saw me struggling to make colour choices so she asked me if I have a favourite painting...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixQy7USXFXowIjkodTBgsfY0jDYsr4LEeJGCrRldH712Kdr7MKqKqbMT-zzu9gWCV1n7f78SfpPqiOKZRi-tbBMT0NPgQRqQMoSmM9PzkCQOVXL-G5sYs3EMofMEYOr2X2Fx8NgCOgtaM/s1600/Claude_Monet_-_Woman_with_a_Parasol.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixQy7USXFXowIjkodTBgsfY0jDYsr4LEeJGCrRldH712Kdr7MKqKqbMT-zzu9gWCV1n7f78SfpPqiOKZRi-tbBMT0NPgQRqQMoSmM9PzkCQOVXL-G5sYs3EMofMEYOr2X2Fx8NgCOgtaM/s400/Claude_Monet_-_Woman_with_a_Parasol.jpg" width="321" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
...and then proceeded to pull <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman_with_a_Parasol_-_Madame_Monet_and_Her_Son">this painting</a> up onto the monitor.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are the yarns that were already on the counter at that point.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMlbWFRZ4C8_M8gN29cFwY0nnKIfVWZsa-6lQNgmrQdq_XkapLdAcINZk1VnX3CQro1LOy0TNvxk5IImPRNQqlIynwcVmFfPEjG7-K61aNWd7d1nYIjkHl1BAg8QSSJ3sxnZOm53Onuk0/s1600/DSCN9729.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMlbWFRZ4C8_M8gN29cFwY0nnKIfVWZsa-6lQNgmrQdq_XkapLdAcINZk1VnX3CQro1LOy0TNvxk5IImPRNQqlIynwcVmFfPEjG7-K61aNWd7d1nYIjkHl1BAg8QSSJ3sxnZOm53Onuk0/s400/DSCN9729.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Clockwise from top left we have sky, clouds, grass/umbrella, shadows, flowers, and the darker portions of the sky. Well will you just look at that! Needless to say, I stopped looking and just bought these six.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The subconscious at work. The funny thing is, I haven't seen the painting in months.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've finished my first successful stranded knitting project and I couldn't be more thrilled.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhas1xuIEgviQ10rvWMrBLblp7xWrpIVRrVUBrH8-6SguWBIzsloYO30m9yEteecjJ7jmxecwm4LgwN74JOVFHML-pRWl-4RdFMxqMNUgaj3pvsa6QbC02240n0BNaslT_9fMDo1vC0TPE/s1600/baby+snowflake+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhas1xuIEgviQ10rvWMrBLblp7xWrpIVRrVUBrH8-6SguWBIzsloYO30m9yEteecjJ7jmxecwm4LgwN74JOVFHML-pRWl-4RdFMxqMNUgaj3pvsa6QbC02240n0BNaslT_9fMDo1vC0TPE/s400/baby+snowflake+3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The pattern is <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-snowflake-2">Baby Snowflake by The Cozy Knitter</a> and is absolutely lovely.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Y3PH1zKMTsDldZwY1FudYT-T0olca6km5aauAO9oYttBQWimidk5_fqzKvsBHEmzDBSFpNkv6C61TDzftURfupFWjX5SJRqhlyzaY5_roOnIRr_QfuHCpodkAnUBgwxF3XMYMPyuA2k/s1600/baby+snowflake+%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Y3PH1zKMTsDldZwY1FudYT-T0olca6km5aauAO9oYttBQWimidk5_fqzKvsBHEmzDBSFpNkv6C61TDzftURfupFWjX5SJRqhlyzaY5_roOnIRr_QfuHCpodkAnUBgwxF3XMYMPyuA2k/s400/baby+snowflake+%25282%2529.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I learned a couple new techniques...and now I want to put the delightful "latvian braid" on everything.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5HyuRkHuEhKepczNin_yAVaoNZH8QIGceOHUCvFU4CpgWsDejbcRyRNSKb5lBjmPLrvuGZYWSsg6UaRovtZl6suUntPQAALhEykqpHcIW0SIw5upRbMx2wUAqO3q4LPYp93fmlrFe5s0/s1600/baby+snowflake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5HyuRkHuEhKepczNin_yAVaoNZH8QIGceOHUCvFU4CpgWsDejbcRyRNSKb5lBjmPLrvuGZYWSsg6UaRovtZl6suUntPQAALhEykqpHcIW0SIw5upRbMx2wUAqO3q4LPYp93fmlrFe5s0/s400/baby+snowflake.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the back is just as lovely as the front. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Note, the super bright colour!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
In progress:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So many buttons. My stockpile is quite low so I'm hustling to get a bunch finished in time for people to add to their Christmas gifts and other cold weather knits. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Pictured, these are the same as <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/245940467/leaf-bead-pendant-handmade-pottery-green?ref=shop_home_active_5">this pendant</a>, which I have had several requests to turn into buttons.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Won't it make an adorable large button?</div>

I've been working on a fun series of yarn bowls. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They're shapes I've been wanting to try for a while now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Because some of my customers live in modern "abodes".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And some knitters are men...who want something a little less fussy.</div>

I'm pretty excited that this piece is working out, and feel the need to share it.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Our local "Center for the Arts" is having a college exposition, and since I am enrolled in the Open Studio at the college, I qualify as a student. I've had this little number simmering in the back of my brain since I made a fabric version a year and a half ago.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
It's a 60-sided figure, and was a little trickier to put together than I expected. If you've worked with clay before, you know that pieces have to go together wet. Which means it's a little bendy, and sloppy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit059V6ZGM-iJ3bezRYB0BXtoVfhsgOT5tPgdwxz4RZ1K4qrdnjYAvn-OYFjNIGNAvQwts0tGmk6gcNI_rSCGW1Dw9_ZvjtPMaaQ8RNh2AB3OjIJXhVxhheNaOGMbwZbmO9hRXdGYwcNc/s1600/DSCN9658.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit059V6ZGM-iJ3bezRYB0BXtoVfhsgOT5tPgdwxz4RZ1K4qrdnjYAvn-OYFjNIGNAvQwts0tGmk6gcNI_rSCGW1Dw9_ZvjtPMaaQ8RNh2AB3OjIJXhVxhheNaOGMbwZbmO9hRXdGYwcNc/s400/DSCN9658.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still have to put a hole in it somewhere (so that it doesn't explode). I'm thinking of glazing it black, and putting a hole large enough to fit a flower stem, and displaying it as a vase. Kind of a symbol of war and peace). I think that would be appropriate given the current social climate, don't you?</div>

It's been a while since I joined yarn along...not because I'm not knitting, but because I'm knitting so <i>slowly</i> that I hardly have a new thing to show.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I did have time to whip up this little darling for my baby niece in time for her first birthday.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVL63OGLiNGREiXt6vY2tEeB6TmtgqNfkC8PFi_F1ear_ui-DkTgf_N_umOmaNjca9aoivTbYZlZDAnm8du2iwaF8uhua6rYMTq1G9ofF79OGvS5MUrY80yxS0jVybzrm3J1tIdxdnGP0/s1600/DSCN9509.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVL63OGLiNGREiXt6vY2tEeB6TmtgqNfkC8PFi_F1ear_ui-DkTgf_N_umOmaNjca9aoivTbYZlZDAnm8du2iwaF8uhua6rYMTq1G9ofF79OGvS5MUrY80yxS0jVybzrm3J1tIdxdnGP0/s400/DSCN9509.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The pattern is by Linda of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/mamma4earth?ref=em">Mamma4earth on etsy</a> and is amazing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The book, obviously, is The Ugly Duckling (that's actually a swan) and is - and has always been- my favourite kids' story. We had to go to 3 different stores to find it, which makes me very very sad.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was lost in a sea of Trademarked character books which will remain nameless. Such a shame.</div>

I frequently get asked how I make my ceramic buttons, so I thought I would take a few moments and show the process from start to finish for one particular button.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOHW8CQZ-Ogk-oMcgiePZluG1PaJmXroZJFcj7fAtTMQi_I-5t2EGwtE-1b3zVyxNVyv2QrZ6GNZ2NMpUJTqKGnyE42yxeFcKS6_PQ8oz2ZjARPLeGTth_rA1FIz5ezVyorwKciu-yVQ4/s1600/DSCN9571.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOHW8CQZ-Ogk-oMcgiePZluG1PaJmXroZJFcj7fAtTMQi_I-5t2EGwtE-1b3zVyxNVyv2QrZ6GNZ2NMpUJTqKGnyE42yxeFcKS6_PQ8oz2ZjARPLeGTth_rA1FIz5ezVyorwKciu-yVQ4/s320/DSCN9571.JPG" width="319" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpXE-a-QfzdH3RTqtF1wPHNEZu1S96tvnFvMjskYjQ7J5i08ax6sltsCPOA_KYSHdEBdOS6Fn1JoAbbsazqETWaxyeb_BErzVLQF7pWkDzPq_Io3X92aAnxN8by6XHQ15v8obKz8HuTE8/s1600/button+how+to+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpXE-a-QfzdH3RTqtF1wPHNEZu1S96tvnFvMjskYjQ7J5i08ax6sltsCPOA_KYSHdEBdOS6Fn1JoAbbsazqETWaxyeb_BErzVLQF7pWkDzPq_Io3X92aAnxN8by6XHQ15v8obKz8HuTE8/s320/button+how+to+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First I roll out a small ball of clay into a rather thin slab, and stamp it with the design for that particular button. This one is a rubber stamp, but usually I use a clay stamp that I have previously made.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyVhELbPa8oCgEKRRULAPUTB5uCWmODf-SVesw7e_9gh01LDLN5y0uxfcfi3iSMQkKYb0b6QnvjrueqsiZmeL_RknSf_bVdRtTyreAhdSVdWleD2YBxaTa8RIBTuY0e-2Gz1-Jv6BJGtI/s1600/button+how+to+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="317" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyVhELbPa8oCgEKRRULAPUTB5uCWmODf-SVesw7e_9gh01LDLN5y0uxfcfi3iSMQkKYb0b6QnvjrueqsiZmeL_RknSf_bVdRtTyreAhdSVdWleD2YBxaTa8RIBTuY0e-2Gz1-Jv6BJGtI/s320/button+how+to+5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I cut the stamped slab into the shape I am currently working on...so these ones are squares.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

glaze them, and then they are ready for the second run through the kiln.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I glaze mine on all sides for a nice smooth finish everywhere that won't snag on your knitting, or sewing, or be scratchy on your skin, but it involves a rather intricate process of wiring and balancing the buttons.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I firmly believe the result is worth the effort.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The whole process takes about 4 to 6 weeks, depending on how many pieces are ready for their kiln run. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ta-Da...the finished product. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Some I keep to admire or for inspiration for further projects. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Some I sew onto my hats, mittens, gloves, bags, whatever.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll be honest...some I just string onto a cord and where as a necklace. That's kinda my favourite.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And of course, some are in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/AtTheCrossroads">my etsy shop</a> so other people can enjoy them too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I hope you enjoyed my little behind the scenes look at the making of such a humble little object.</div>

A single bloom in a bud vase, a little bundle in a mason jar, maybe even just a couple of fresh hosta leaves in a bottle. I'm not sure when I stopped doing it, but the other day I cut a few little garden clippings and put them in a tiny vase and realized that I missed having something fresh around all the time.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIparHGSkdt_tsxxDSezk84iKCgvC4KSXOAIdx12K6UK_xL3cKefcx-Vm-A442vxKU3kYyH2GNIvZ-rTOSodEEfuPJ0sF0buZncOHMnCjakonBjQQMlDVlL6brz9V74A8WJQT7hZaUqtM/s1600/little+grey+vase2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIparHGSkdt_tsxxDSezk84iKCgvC4KSXOAIdx12K6UK_xL3cKefcx-Vm-A442vxKU3kYyH2GNIvZ-rTOSodEEfuPJ0sF0buZncOHMnCjakonBjQQMlDVlL6brz9V74A8WJQT7hZaUqtM/s400/little+grey+vase2.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I decided that I'm going to make a concentrated effort to keep this little vase filled all the time. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And I'm going to post them to instagram under the hashtag #simpleblossoms if anyone wants to play along.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can tag me (@remembrancespottery) if you like.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
My hope was to have them ready and listed in time for all those holiday gift-makers who have already started their Christmas knits. I've seen your ambitious lists! You go for it, my friends.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Incidentally, if you are not a knitter, or crocheter, you can still personalize a store bought piece to make it "yours" with the quick addition of a little somethin' somethin'.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Slowly but surely, I'm adding these (and a few more even) to <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/AtTheCrossroads?ref=hdr_shop_menu">my etsy shop</a><br />

The prototype came out of the kiln last night, and I'm thrilled with the result.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeLqU5qvLg93sGU6qqwhFfOScaCwMhll5eI0RcinlWA2coXtJq-b_wpBDSfkFthaRR8ZjJr3aqLXfwJIsqLKs5jk_ddL0QQ7nJgoGSGpMwLH0xkqCVxaoRyS4D8vjQiIaFLOS-x1ssLkc/s1600/peony+flower.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeLqU5qvLg93sGU6qqwhFfOScaCwMhll5eI0RcinlWA2coXtJq-b_wpBDSfkFthaRR8ZjJr3aqLXfwJIsqLKs5jk_ddL0QQ7nJgoGSGpMwLH0xkqCVxaoRyS4D8vjQiIaFLOS-x1ssLkc/s400/peony+flower.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been intrigued by the Victorian's "language of flowers" for years, and found out that the peony is for "happiness in marriage". I'm thinking it might make a great wedding gift.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This one was the prototype but there will definitely be more (mostly because I really really want to see a whole row of them lit along the center of my dining table).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the side view. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL4TdI6aI3_GLbin-MrUU409xkcfqwtyR8KAJc4nzVx_gT88ejnAv6UuSiuJt3bt5m9tEMhizgXzxj-yj5yVpWZ66xB_FeyvFnyFzfSieNAQJjWXvvenwei8maGd5jTiXqJIpwbt_79YA/s1600/peony+candle+cup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL4TdI6aI3_GLbin-MrUU409xkcfqwtyR8KAJc4nzVx_gT88ejnAv6UuSiuJt3bt5m9tEMhizgXzxj-yj5yVpWZ66xB_FeyvFnyFzfSieNAQJjWXvvenwei8maGd5jTiXqJIpwbt_79YA/s400/peony+candle+cup.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the "work in progress" picture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZOj1RoWJ5vH_PeI641inJZtYSz7Jp04KY7Vl4W0J4ycXK0bSXjVGK3fMLEqPpOuatLPMfHg1bFn1N-JvABbskA_WecN2udXsqugkFh330_Nctp-Vnq_qT-mqGB1xbLZ_WPrbkUWmD4f8/s1600/peony+wip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZOj1RoWJ5vH_PeI641inJZtYSz7Jp04KY7Vl4W0J4ycXK0bSXjVGK3fMLEqPpOuatLPMfHg1bFn1N-JvABbskA_WecN2udXsqugkFh330_Nctp-Vnq_qT-mqGB1xbLZ_WPrbkUWmD4f8/s400/peony+wip.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Being the prototype, this particular one won't be up in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/AtTheCrossroads">my etsy shop</a>, <span style="text-align: center;">but </span><a href="https://www.etsy.com/your/shops/AtTheCrossroads/tools/listings/245675133" style="text-align: center;">these hosta leaf ones</a> were listed today. Incidentally, hostas mean "devotion" in the language of flowers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's where we plan to eventually retire, but right now it's very "roughin' it". We cook over an open fire (or a camp stove if it's pouring rain). There is no running water (unless the waterfall is flowing), no clean water at all actually, no hydro, and a very minimal sleep cabin with four bunks. What it <i>does</i> have is peace, quiet, birds and wildlife, and potential. I decided an earth oven may give us a few more cooking options, and over our visits there this summer, I set about building one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixt2ULVsEcUHWm1op9jfhiQPhhP9usYoI-hwEYrSiXVfgSbAO2CVVWVjrRIog7QBMI5NSCO89G9tY2ZCUgQ8BRz_wWCPZWwG1xUH3ORiBG5ElYIQgHH0iESM82jObd0c47xPRL55puxJ4/s1600/earth+oven+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixt2ULVsEcUHWm1op9jfhiQPhhP9usYoI-hwEYrSiXVfgSbAO2CVVWVjrRIog7QBMI5NSCO89G9tY2ZCUgQ8BRz_wWCPZWwG1xUH3ORiBG5ElYIQgHH0iESM82jObd0c47xPRL55puxJ4/s400/earth+oven+10.jpg" width="311" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/books/product/9780967984674-item.html?mkwid=sSgF62lix_dc&pcrid=44154474422&pkw=&pmt=&s_campaign=goo-Shopping_Books&gclid=COft_e6ywscCFQczaQod67QNzg">This book</a> has great step by step instructions on building your own, and I used it thoroughly. <br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's my adventure:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First you build a foundation of rocks so the moisture can't get up into your oven (see picture above). I chose not to use mortar as this is the trial oven, and I was intending to build it with just what was available. The space in between the rocks is filled with ash from the fire pit. In hindsight, this may not have been the best idea. The book says to use rubble, but the ash MAY let moisture in. We'll know next year.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPHQ_G0A6PnK4prjyagBXSRE8zYxzkSGYuu2oIM4VTGkUecteqMrwDuRL1NpQnKo7SlSa29XpzWvnbMpcGpnWEri1mi2q8nQh6s1BoVRE9YlRYnV2IWPbSvhSaoW83rpJkDF1UWXRtnoA/s1600/earth+oven1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPHQ_G0A6PnK4prjyagBXSRE8zYxzkSGYuu2oIM4VTGkUecteqMrwDuRL1NpQnKo7SlSa29XpzWvnbMpcGpnWEri1mi2q8nQh6s1BoVRE9YlRYnV2IWPbSvhSaoW83rpJkDF1UWXRtnoA/s400/earth+oven1.jpg" width="282" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Collect your materials. I built mine over a period of about 2 months, so it wasn't that exhausting. Still very hard work if you are out in the wilderness and have to bring everything in uphill.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaTiZyGfANDHKW_NvTR94GBbTEKa6wKxd_t0sh6BmUbqfW4sX9hvsz29DCl3o2-mxPGsktxrhZSNiBHtgZ6zNVIPfbddnY485WrJFxrKzXn1OmlUE1ERf8guOjzwB2Y2J9HfdQnawDTw4/s1600/earth+oven5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaTiZyGfANDHKW_NvTR94GBbTEKa6wKxd_t0sh6BmUbqfW4sX9hvsz29DCl3o2-mxPGsktxrhZSNiBHtgZ6zNVIPfbddnY485WrJFxrKzXn1OmlUE1ERf8guOjzwB2Y2J9HfdQnawDTw4/s320/earth+oven5.jpg" width="237" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next, you make a dome of sand - this will be the size of the interior of the oven - so mine will be big enough for one small loaf or a personal size pizza, or something of that size. Cover it with wet paper to act as a barrier, and then add a 3" layer of "building mud". Those beer bottles are part of the insulation layer. There is also a layer under the dome, but I forgot to take that picture.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWgPXdlZts1mqhkIQjBXWIi6UbIYP6CWwqVHcviz06gvHI-KChtEFoQCMSXZeH3KuMdMi8KOo1X_5-Ikb0tAtqy-TQyJvpUp14UwgxadyYqADH3S4VSFj7BJTiTVyq4LBi9DH-6Yf-uFM/s1600/earth+oven+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWgPXdlZts1mqhkIQjBXWIi6UbIYP6CWwqVHcviz06gvHI-KChtEFoQCMSXZeH3KuMdMi8KOo1X_5-Ikb0tAtqy-TQyJvpUp14UwgxadyYqADH3S4VSFj7BJTiTVyq4LBi9DH-6Yf-uFM/s400/earth+oven+3.jpg" width="323" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All of those pails are my building materials. You'll need clay, sand, water, and a clay-based mud.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8x1P-th0vrl9KlCM5_E1w6VleAzMT2XvSxsH9YsDYqLeYGEM_kV3N00Nji8xuhgIT1TqHl4a8I2HD7tgnXJDpia5o1pCcwz69Xruv-z1a2ryQV2ThijgDQWMB67Y0uI9tULseMMpBys4/s1600/earth+oven+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8x1P-th0vrl9KlCM5_E1w6VleAzMT2XvSxsH9YsDYqLeYGEM_kV3N00Nji8xuhgIT1TqHl4a8I2HD7tgnXJDpia5o1pCcwz69Xruv-z1a2ryQV2ThijgDQWMB67Y0uI9tULseMMpBys4/s400/earth+oven+4.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
That big blue bag was my mixing bag at first, as I was only able to handle small batches at a time. You can also use a tarp, and mix with your feet, but I was getting filthy enough as it was.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbsRitRm7t0ctAvx8Dy4GB-Iyt5kukffPWgP-15kg8CPbbXvzJGw_7nFbhNaqHaF4CEjVrEg5VdwE5ExTFbwpFKAufPprLhLPGp14hidmaLG7OhbSkv3FTbxW19sU2fnVUkOBKovfM22U/s1600/earth+oven6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbsRitRm7t0ctAvx8Dy4GB-Iyt5kukffPWgP-15kg8CPbbXvzJGw_7nFbhNaqHaF4CEjVrEg5VdwE5ExTFbwpFKAufPprLhLPGp14hidmaLG7OhbSkv3FTbxW19sU2fnVUkOBKovfM22U/s400/earth+oven6.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
Keep adding your "building mud" until you have a nice thick layer over your whole dome.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi77HgXvJXSlqeUgGQ7ugpDwc6Y1gpJrTTcAVTbxIvJPqb83xwA1HVnYUQguZeQMFL_6YMwmf5CuPx3Ubgk5rL3fzT7fCQfIrqt2Zy-4_kmflturtwrO6A5pSScMFrhLT-BIUdNOqUeiDg/s1600/earth+oven+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi77HgXvJXSlqeUgGQ7ugpDwc6Y1gpJrTTcAVTbxIvJPqb83xwA1HVnYUQguZeQMFL_6YMwmf5CuPx3Ubgk5rL3fzT7fCQfIrqt2Zy-4_kmflturtwrO6A5pSScMFrhLT-BIUdNOqUeiDg/s400/earth+oven+8.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Once it's dry on the outside, you take all the sand back out of the interior. I lit a fire to dry out the inside so I could add the next layer right away.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgirNACTZhAJwZ6m4eDdnoJb7l5Pz0SkEDr8JYefcRlF6cITU-VPXrdOHzsj1279N1UEXnA3TDLDO8U0Lr1Ay2qDT24M21TDg4Y2HDJpD1EIJKd4T31QHKlWenOW7pkmzVG1FwW1_yz_e8/s1600/earth+oven+9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgirNACTZhAJwZ6m4eDdnoJb7l5Pz0SkEDr8JYefcRlF6cITU-VPXrdOHzsj1279N1UEXnA3TDLDO8U0Lr1Ay2qDT24M21TDg4Y2HDJpD1EIJKd4T31QHKlWenOW7pkmzVG1FwW1_yz_e8/s400/earth+oven+9.jpg" width="340" /></a></div>
Then comes the insulation layer - sawdust mixed with clay slip - good thing I know a potter :). This is half of mine. I did it in two parts as we ran out of sawdust on that trip and I had to wait for the next batch of dead trees to be chainsawed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqLK9h_Glfn_VnYKqv9ocVdV9oEWefChhoBUR77g-snoBH68ahmWwMdNbIS9Eyr8vWTfyCbyapP6spMf2ehb8gycizOwbELRcUXZUoNJrNbSNnDbcyWCPHxo8xIOpnpGSuiNnwHu1c_v0/s1600/earth+oven+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqLK9h_Glfn_VnYKqv9ocVdV9oEWefChhoBUR77g-snoBH68ahmWwMdNbIS9Eyr8vWTfyCbyapP6spMf2ehb8gycizOwbELRcUXZUoNJrNbSNnDbcyWCPHxo8xIOpnpGSuiNnwHu1c_v0/s400/earth+oven+10.jpg" width="311" /></a></div>
Next trip: I added the rest of the insulation layer, and the final coat.<br />
My finish coat was clay slip mixed with sand, and of all things...cattail fluff. It was the best fibrous material I could think of that could be had in abundance where we were.<br />
<br />
It still needs a door, so that I can bake in it.<br />
Now the test is...will it still be in one piece when we get to back up to try it out?<br />

Cookie stamps, buttons, magnets, beads, and some surprises,</div>

I've got loads and loads of things drying/dried on trays, and then I realized I better make some bigger things to fill the kiln. Maybe I need to actually get a smaller kiln?Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12447113571069402625noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-777262461669776035.post-65660982778607396672015-07-28T11:18:00.002-04:002015-07-28T11:18:31.587-04:00Mushrooms and toadstools.A few weeks ago, I was playing around with some leftover clay and made this little collection of mushrooms.<br />

None of them modeled after anything in particular, except the morel in the middle.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I would love to learn more about them and find out which ones we can eat.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And of course, now I want to make some fairly realistic copies in clay. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm just trying to figure out how the stem can support the heavy top. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Stay tuned.</div>

I gave up on the idea of surprise socks because I just couldn't "sneak" the size of his foot. So here is the first pair. They fit. He says they are comfortable (that says a lot coming from the pickiest person I know, clothes wise).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBav7Hucinp0YZH8DtJn9yHY3zvmMRqp7-gQ7thCT_QjNLyM8CUIhyphenhyphenngHkU0SO9_-Je9kaBXRNcW4qcjAaGNcovotEumJ-cBYeoyLWADMSuGRK1UGCmu1fbLIBe-WQeD9KVcIn7oAZUwY/s1600/DSCN9315.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBav7Hucinp0YZH8DtJn9yHY3zvmMRqp7-gQ7thCT_QjNLyM8CUIhyphenhyphenngHkU0SO9_-Je9kaBXRNcW4qcjAaGNcovotEumJ-cBYeoyLWADMSuGRK1UGCmu1fbLIBe-WQeD9KVcIn7oAZUwY/s400/DSCN9315.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I really wish I could share the pattern with you, but I printed it off in February and there is no title anywhere, and it's not saved to my Pinterest board, or my Ravelry favourites. Go figure. I know I first came across the idea for them <a href="http://www.purlbee.com/2012/07/08/whits-knits-sporty-striped-peds/">here on the purl bee</a>.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Started on my first day of holidays, and finished two days after we got back....my new cowl. In "not-grey"!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEili2kUkSLXxJQjPsiIcvYQ7tl1YYQEIpF1U2YZYDRr-STvsgScePL21CiSGfTt-V2c2HGhtLlTj4z6RAdr45Bfjgujc5iQG34jthmzm81oQTy6a1fHGOG0LNyIotYR84zzVQm3xxgiqqg/s1600/DSCN9326.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEili2kUkSLXxJQjPsiIcvYQ7tl1YYQEIpF1U2YZYDRr-STvsgScePL21CiSGfTt-V2c2HGhtLlTj4z6RAdr45Bfjgujc5iQG34jthmzm81oQTy6a1fHGOG0LNyIotYR84zzVQm3xxgiqqg/s400/DSCN9326.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
It's just a super simple garter stitch. I think 30 stitches. Every sixth row is a pattern row, with Yarn ver, K2tog, knit 2 stitches, repeat. I spaced them out so they alternate, but it looks equally pretty when they line up perfectly. I used exactly one ball of yarn, and may end up ripping out the seam to add a couple extra inches if I can get another ball of the same colour. It's a wee bit snug for my taste.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0zl4fPfSPLMi1CmiThGfcasgWVx4XNMr4YzycgPORvOHeW3NAkATpSnDexHwGmnuf2y-JxkqBtzXGky44Yl7UmLg8dnwA3QwUD6b2sqQA8gYJjIZX4TtzTd7JbmGhsqPFYMBy2USHK2A/s1600/DSCN9331.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0zl4fPfSPLMi1CmiThGfcasgWVx4XNMr4YzycgPORvOHeW3NAkATpSnDexHwGmnuf2y-JxkqBtzXGky44Yl7UmLg8dnwA3QwUD6b2sqQA8gYJjIZX4TtzTd7JbmGhsqPFYMBy2USHK2A/s400/DSCN9331.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
And what's a knitting post without a yarn bowl? The mate to this one has already been delivered. They were a prototype, and I love them, and I will be making many many more. And that's my sock yarn in "acceptable boy colours" waiting to be turned in to more ankle socks.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
One of my favourite things about what I do is helping someone get EXACTLY what they are looking for, especially when there is no way they would be able to find it anywhere else. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3hFJrokBdB0WvERRnrxsN78I2TohYnPbjii61yYGu8bdzAM3Gfnp232qDc0yblFhv5vEO8MS7dfeSu2vRcecacNFtMTZGdBT3mUNSACmxw3Nt1PDvzKkKfL9nkZ0yeVQoQnrh4esTSJE/s1600/Custom+order+beads.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3hFJrokBdB0WvERRnrxsN78I2TohYnPbjii61yYGu8bdzAM3Gfnp232qDc0yblFhv5vEO8MS7dfeSu2vRcecacNFtMTZGdBT3mUNSACmxw3Nt1PDvzKkKfL9nkZ0yeVQoQnrh4esTSJE/s400/Custom+order+beads.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Seriously, other than a custom order, where does one find something as specific as dog bone shaped beads with a martini glass carved into them (the martini glass is my customer's logo) and coloured in blue?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I kept telling myself I would take "in progress" pictures with the next batch I worked on, so I would have a nice set of "how to" pictures, but I always worked on these in the evening when the lighting was too poor.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Basically the process was: roll some coils, cut them to size, sculpt the bone shape, put in the hole with pin tool, expand the hole with a drill bit, carve the martini glass, bisque fire, paint on the underglaze, wash off extra underglaze, wax the holes, glaze, and fire again. Followed by quality control check in bright sunlight. Phee-ouf.</div>

If you are looking for something VERY particular...I just might be able to help you too. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A cookie stamp, buttons or gift tags with your own logo, a set of beads custom made for you, an image carved into some dishes. The sky is the limit.<br />

For as long as I can remember, my aunt has had a rather large patch of feverfew in her front yard flower bed. Years ago, she let me take home a seed head, and I have had it growing in my yard ever since.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8b700oxKvEB9S_JcvooAumd32BNoBaapcC7XM33J77iihfphFUiDQIT-EPLwpqbkm5C7QzXv35tkqUfiaq4Et7y9SPHse1eVJ-our89f0f2U57m5xX69a5xRn-dASYMn6z16L94oGOlM/s1600/feverfew.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8b700oxKvEB9S_JcvooAumd32BNoBaapcC7XM33J77iihfphFUiDQIT-EPLwpqbkm5C7QzXv35tkqUfiaq4Et7y9SPHse1eVJ-our89f0f2U57m5xX69a5xRn-dASYMn6z16L94oGOlM/s320/feverfew.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is one of my all time favourite early summer flowers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I decided to capture their essence in clay so that I can enjoy them year round. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
At some point, I discovered a "double" feverfew flower in my yard, and both kinds have now been growing in harmony ever since...although they migrate all around the yard and I never really know where they will turn up.</div>

When I was a child, I would collect leaves from spring to fall, iron them between sheets of wax paper and collect them in scrapbooks. Buttercups and other small flowers were included in there too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiknF8xamj7y9dEVuzxWXKW385SXfD3lb80HPxAm-Eka_19M_W3fa9Hw92m8pAxG_DBBmF6rZ4emirS7WKYy-HeYGRuujppK6-crAk6JMCYTd3AiTfwpGSDMnY2hZ80dpS_ZdYnCrKHAyM/s1600/hosta+leaves.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiknF8xamj7y9dEVuzxWXKW385SXfD3lb80HPxAm-Eka_19M_W3fa9Hw92m8pAxG_DBBmF6rZ4emirS7WKYy-HeYGRuujppK6-crAk6JMCYTd3AiTfwpGSDMnY2hZ80dpS_ZdYnCrKHAyM/s320/hosta+leaves.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm starting to think that many of my latest projects are in fact just a throwback to my childhood.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsmrNhpCmqaB3Mjjgu1QVqTHjvV5qewVXNOxnGc6nX57mT3RbQC5HdiXriP3igAiGUYJyRR-mfE6t2MP3Hie0HgoNgSStQW0rWBlVVt9yBJVAmXgbCDVilfeZtvAMfHXX6hntDSJh32RU/s1600/clay+leaf+bowls.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsmrNhpCmqaB3Mjjgu1QVqTHjvV5qewVXNOxnGc6nX57mT3RbQC5HdiXriP3igAiGUYJyRR-mfE6t2MP3Hie0HgoNgSStQW0rWBlVVt9yBJVAmXgbCDVilfeZtvAMfHXX6hntDSJh32RU/s320/clay+leaf+bowls.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm still preserving leaves, trying to capture a moment in time. The only difference is the medium.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYF_y0xe5qSasMmidU2Ox246t6R9sI6lGlH7F8_JuftqgcdJtjJUZcbTudH0OXoMeWoymlKpP72cOYONFu2wa45jiawEJfEPo77E6CgLpPis7nQ7uPXJRdgtk3etSEWCzL3B05gPoAhDE/s1600/leaf+bowls+in+progress.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYF_y0xe5qSasMmidU2Ox246t6R9sI6lGlH7F8_JuftqgcdJtjJUZcbTudH0OXoMeWoymlKpP72cOYONFu2wa45jiawEJfEPo77E6CgLpPis7nQ7uPXJRdgtk3etSEWCzL3B05gPoAhDE/s320/leaf+bowls+in+progress.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My children collected rocks (they still do), and nice leaves in the fall, but they never preserved them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I remember having a flower press too.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have to wonder if kids still do this, or if it's a thing of the past.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'd love to hear from you if you remember doing it, or if your children/grandchildren did.</div>
<div>
